Limitations

Hostwright is in active development and not production ready. This page states the current support boundary.

  • Manifest v2 with a restricted, fail-closed parser, deterministic legacy migration preview, validation, planning, and capability reporting.
  • Two negotiated runtime providers (Apple CLI and Containerization) with immutable capability snapshots, observation, and confirmation-gated lifecycle mutation: up, down, run, start, stop, restart, rm, and update, each dependency-ordered and plan-hash confirmed. apply is a compatibility alias for a confirmed up plan.
  • exec, attach, copy, export, inspect, stats, and logs --follow against a qualified runtime provider.
  • Local image management (inspect, pull, push, tag, load, save, build, delete, prune, cache pin/unpin) bound to observed digests, not command output.
  • Registry authentication, OCI referrer discovery/publishing, and signed supply-chain evidence: image-signature trust (imageTrust), SBOMs (imageSBOM), vulnerability-report policy (imageVulnerability), and build provenance (imageProvenance).
  • Hostwright-owned named-volume storage through Storage Provider API v1: guarded mounts, snapshots, verified backup/restore, quota and pressure accounting, reclaim policy, and orphan recovery via the built-in hostwright-local provider.
  • Hostwright-owned Keychain secret management (create, update, list, check, delete) and five secretEnv reference schemes.
  • SQLite schema v15 with desired, observed, event, operation, ownership, health, restart, image, storage, and recovery records, Hostwright UUIDs, provider binding, and fencing, plus secure default paths under Application Support and legacy migration.
  • Online state maintenance: integrity checks, verified backups, and confirmation-gated restore, repair, and recover.
  • Bounded logs, local events, workload recovery inspection plus recovery resume|rollback, and diagnostics; safe doctor checks; local path reporting; local policy and team profiles; a one-shot Control API covering lifecycle and image operations; and a reviewed-local extension handshake.
  • A foreground reconciliation loop, advisory scheduler and resource models, narrow stack-file import, and local benchmark evidence.
  • Source builds and a vendor Homebrew tap (brew install hostwright/tap/hostwright) as unsupported qualification channels, an installed-lifecycle tool (hostwright-dist) for install, upgrade, repair, rollback, and uninstall at an explicit prefix, and a signing and notarization release pipeline.

The following are outside the current command surface. Each states present behavior.

Area Current behavior
Distribution Source build and a vendor Homebrew tap are available as unsupported qualification channels; brew install hostwright (the unqualified formula name, Homebrew-core) does not exist.
Networking Loopback publishing only. Custom networks, DNS, ingress, TLS termination, and tunnels are absent.
Daemon Foreground loop only. Autonomous background operation, a launch agent, and unattended mutation are absent.
Control and plugins One-shot API covering read operations, lifecycle, and image mutation. A persistent listener, RBAC, audit API, and plugin execution are absent.
Scheduling Advisory models only. Placement, capacity reservation, and accelerator exposure are absent.
Multi-host Single host only. Clustering, consensus, and remote operations are absent.
Kubernetes and Docker No CRI, kubelet, pod sandbox, Docker API, or Compose runtime. Stack import is a narrow conversion.
Storage sharing No shared or remote storage backend; volumes are local to the one Mac that created them.

Some capabilities are held as permanent boundaries by design. See Non-goals.
